Are revolving doors suitable for wheelchair users?

Overview of the criteria that ensure a revolving door is accessible for wheelchair users

Yes, revolving doors can be highly suitable for wheelchair users and other individuals with specific accessibility needs. However, the door’s diameter and the number of wings are key factors. Larger diameters and, in some cases, three wings instead of four, provide more space within each segment, making it easier for wheelchairs, mobility scooters, strollers, and individuals using mobility aids to pass through comfortably.

Our Tourniket, featuring three door wings and a minimum diameter of 3,400 mm, has been tested and certified by PBTconsult as accessible for individuals with disabilities. This certification is based on the guidelines of Ieder(in), an umbrella organisation for people with physical disabilities, intellectual disabilities, or chronic illnesses, and it meets the requirements for the International Accessibility Symbol (IAS).

For revolving doors with an automatic folding mechanism (autoloading), a three-wing model with a minimum diameter of 2,800 mm is sufficient to qualify for IAS certification. In both cases, the door segments are spacious enough to comfortably accommodate wheelchair users.

Automatic revolving doors are also equipped with an accessibility button. When pressed, the door slows down for a set duration, giving users plenty of time to pass through at a more relaxed pace.
