Is maintenance for automatic doors mandatory?

Is it mandatory to maintain automatic doors, and who is responsible?

Legal requirements may vary by country. Please consult your local Boon Edam expert for more detailed information about local regulations.

In Europe, having automatic doors inspected and maintained regularly is legally required. Horizontally operating automatic doors are subject to the EN 16005 standard, a European regulation governing the safety of automatic doors. This standard applies to doors used for regular access, escape routes, and fire- or smoke-resistant purposes. Introduced in April 2013, the EN 16005 is enforced in all countries that are part of the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN).

The EN 16005 standard requires automatic doors to undergo regular maintenance at least once a year. This maintenance must be carried out by a certified service provider and documented in writing. Non-compliance with the standard can make the door owner liable if a safety issue arises and is proven to have been caused by negligence.
